A loose stone is graded here, at the counter, with you watching through the same loupe. Colour and clarity get called out as we go, along with the part most sellers are never told about: cut. Two stones of identical carat, colour and clarity can differ by thousands depending on how well the thing was cut, and that difference is visible once someone shows you what to look for.
Certification helps. A GIA or AGS report speeds everything up and usually improves the offer, because a documented stone is easier for us to move on. Papers from less rigorous labs get treated as a starting point rather than gospel — inflated grades are common, and we will show you where our reading differs.
Stones without any paperwork are entirely normal. Most estate diamonds were bought long before certification became routine, and they are graded here the same way.
