A full dinner service is one of the last things families think to have appraised and one of the first things they regret giving away. Limoges, Meissen, Herend, Royal Copenhagen, Spode and Minton all retain real markets, and a complete service in an active pattern is worth many times a partial one.
What we look at: the backstamp and what period it belongs to, the pattern name, how many places survive intact, and whether the serving pieces are still with the set. Those tureens and platters carry a disproportionate share of the value, which is why a service missing them drops so sharply.
Gold-rimmed pieces that went through a dishwasher for twenty years are worth less than the same service kept in a cabinet, and there is no gentle way to say it. We would rather show you the wear under a light than discover the disagreement later.
